As we head into spring, it’s important to practice mindfulness. And I know we all say this and it’s hard to make this a habit but I think we can do it. Some of the things that I’ve been doing are taking a moment not to look at my phone in the morning. I read or journal and then have coffee and conversation with my husband before we take our walk in the morning with our dogs.
Now, how does that transfer into haircare? Well, if we’re not taking care of our whole selves, we’re not taking care of our hair. One way that you can start practicing mindfulness is simple. When you are shampooing and conditioning your hair, take the time to feel every part of the scalp. Make sure the hair is completely saturated before you add shampoo. I suggest shampooing at least twice and sometimes three times if you’re not getting the lather they need to cleanse the hair properly. Let the bubbles do their thing. Take the time to scrub every part of your head and think, “Where am I scrubbing? How much pressure am I using?” This will not only clean your hair and scalp well, but it will help you step into the practice of mindfulness.
After rinsing the shampoo, take the time to condition (mid shaft to ends if you have long hair). Work the conditioner through and detangle with a wet brush or a comb if you need to. Focus on how you’re coming or working the container through. Ask yourself, “How does this feel? Do I need to to add more?”
This act of being mindful while you shampoo and condition your hair is so helpful. Especially during this time of uncertainty. How do we take care of ourselves give the self care we need? For some of us that could be taking a walk in the morning. For some of us, it’s lifting weights. For others it’s reading. But sometimes the simple act of being mindful while you shampoo and condition your hair is self care. It is a way to begin this practice and push the world away while you focus on cleansing your hair.
I know it sounds simple, but try it. You may surprise yourself. This is one way I come back to myself.
