When I was a kid, my siblings and I spent many days swimming in the pool. Our biggest achievement was turning our above-ground swimming pool into a whirlpool. That kept us entertained for hours and it was a fantastic way to burn some energy. When we got a little older, Mom got pool passes for the whole summer at the public pool. We spent every day there from open to close during the week.
As a single parent, Mom found ways to give us the most she could. We loved going to the pool every day. We weren’t the only kids spending the day there
and we had a blast with our friends. I looked forward to the summers for this reason. However, our hair was abundant with chlorine and our skin was a little parched.
There’s no reason we still can’t spend time outside by the pool but there are things that I wish Mom ad known back then to help us out. Here are a few tips and tricks to help survive the rest of the summer.
Apply Sunscreen Strategically: Use about an ounce and a half (a shot glass full) for your whole body. Make sure to get often-missed spots like the tops of your feet, behind your ears, and the back of your neck.
Wear Polarized Sunglasses: This will help with the glare and the UV rays. It will also protect the the skin around your eyes.
Cover Your Head: Wearing a scarf or a hat can protect your hair and your scalp. We forget that our scalp is skin and it can burn as well.
Stay Hydrated: Heat and physical activity cause rapid fluid loss. Keep a large pitcher of ice water poolside as a visual reminder to drink up. This is something that we made sure to do. Also, salty snacks and replacing electrolytes is helpful.
Use Clarifying Shampoo: When your done with pool time, be sure to use a nice clarifying shampoo to get the elements and chlorine out of the hair. Follow up with a conditioning mask. This will ensure that your hair recovers from all of the fun in the sun.
Hopefully these tips will keep your fun in the sun a little safer. Enjoy the rays and stay hydrated and safe.
